It’s been just a little over five years since the tragic sinking of the MV Sewol ferry on 16 April 2014 that shook the entire nation of South Korea. Birthday is the first South Korean movie to revisit the disaster and its traumatic impact on the living who have lost their loved ones. It follows husband and wife Jung-Il (Sol Kyung-Gu) and Soon-Nam (Jeon Do-Yeon), who are still grieving the loss of their eldest son, and struggle to keep their family going, especially for their remaining child.
