Another musical masterpiece from director John Carney, the mind who brought us Once, features pop superstars Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green with Keira Knightley
College sweethearts Gretta (played by Keira Knightley) and Dave (pop-rock star Adam Levine) have been song writing partners since they met.
When the couple moves to New York in search of fame and fortune, Gretta gets cut from the partnership when Dave scores a huge record deal.
Where does this leave Gretta? What musical journey will she next go on?
Re-Sparking the Music
In another part of the city, Dan (played by Mark Ruffalo) has been sacked from his record-label executive job and is drowning his sorrows in beer he can’t afford.
Sparks fly when the two lost souls, Gretta and Dan, meet in a bar. Dan is immediately impressed when he hears Gretta perform on stage. With no money and big dreams, the unlikely duo takes on the world with their music.
Adam Levine’s Debut
Like most films of this type, a big part of its success depends on the music. Interestingly, Begin Again brings us the acting debut of Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who plays the fresh talent who leaves his past life behind on his quest for fame and glory.
Director John Carney, famous for Once, manages to use both original and existing songs to compliment the emotions of the film’s characters. This seems to take place smoothly and effortlessly.
Apart from Levine’s deliciously-talented voice and Knightley’s heartfelt soul-searching original songs (and, of course, beauty) Begin Again also features the likes of Cee Lo Green (Gnarls Barkley and “The Voice”) and hip-hop star and actor Mos Def.
Now You See Me
Mark Ruffalo is perhaps one of the most sought-after actors of our time. He bounces between screen and stage and has worked with world famous directors such as Lee Ang and Martin Scorsese.
Perhaps not as often seen on the big screen as his fans would like, this multiple award-winning actor finally returns to the big screen after his amazing performance in Now You See Me.
Ruffalo fans can also look forward to his fan-favourite character Bruce Banner (The Hulk) in the upcoming Avengers film, Age of Ultron.
Whether you are a fan of Ruffalo, Knightley, Levine or simply romantic musical “dramedies”, Begin Again will make an interesting watch.
