Peep into a bookstore and you might spot a different kind of Lee Kuan Yew title under the “Singapore” section. The late founding father now has a manga-style biographical comic book created by Japanese artists.
Titled “The LKY Story – Lee Kuan Yew: The Man Who Shaped a Nation”, the comic chronicles the life and story of Mr Lee in 248 hand-drawn pages. The book launched today in all leading bookstores and retails for $16.90.
It was written by author Yoshio Nabeta and drawn by illustrator Yoshihide Fujiwara, who worked on the project over a span of one and a half years, during which Nabeta read numerous books on Mr Lee as part of his background research. Fujiwara is best known for his illustrations in “Kenji”, “Conde Koma” and “Aegis in the Dark”.
The manga was presented by Shogakukan Asia to commemorate the 50th year of Singapore-Japan diplomatic ties, and is the first in a series of original biographical comic books to be launched by the publisher.
“The LKY Story” will be distributed in 10 countries including Brunei, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong), Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
“The LKY Story – Lee Kuan Yew: The Man Who Shaped a Nation” is available at $16.90 in all leading book stores.
