‘Downton Abbey’ Movie: 5 Things You Need To Know

The Crawleys are coming back!

It's really happening! We're going to get a Downton Abbey movie in 2019!

Rumours of bringing the multi-award-winning British period drama to the big screen have been circling around since the series ended with its sixth season in 2015. Fans waited eagerly for more news, and were rewarded earlier this year with the confirmation that a Downton movie will indeed be made.

While filming was still in process, we learned a few things about who's returning and what the film will be about, even getting a little sneak peek! Here's everything you need to know about the much-anticipated Downton Abbey movie.

3. The returning cast

You can count on almost all of your favourite characters to return for the movie reunion. More than 20 characters will fill the movie! The original cast members confirmed to be returning include Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley, Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith Crawley, Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley, Elizabeth McGovern as Cora Crawley, Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates, and the one and only Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess. As the Dame infamously expressed her displeasure towards the series and a potential movie, we’re plenty surprised she’s reprising her iconic role. But we’re elated she’s signed on to do so – it wouldn’t be Downton Abbey without the ever-quotable Dowager Countess!

Much to our disappointment, Lily James, who made a name for herself as Lady Rose MacClare in the series, will not be making a return. Granted, it wouldn’t be good to force the storyline to fit a character who had moved to New York. An even less probable character return would be fan favourite Matthew Crawley (played by Dan Stevens), who died in Season 3. We prayed for some fantastical comeback, but alas, Dan Stevens is reportedly not going to be in the movie.
