What’s So Crazy About Crazy Horse Paris

Photos: Crazy Horse Paris

The French cabaret is crazy for all the right reasons, and not just blatant nudity

In case you're unfamiliar with Crazy Horse, here's a quick primer. The legendary Parisian cabaret founded in 1951 (yes, it's even older than Singapore) is renowned for its burlesque dances. But such sensual performances are dime a dozen in the French capital. So what makes Crazy Horse different from the rest of the crowd? We find out for ourselves when these long-legged beauties dropped our country to present their burlesque act in Forever Crazy by Crazy Horse Paris.

4. Crazy Embodiment of Feminism

While a show full of bare-bodied women performers might not be the most obvious image of feminism, it’s well on its way to becoming a feminist icon in its own right. The performers have all-natural bodies, which sends a strong message about the cabaret’s stand on plastic surgery and body envy.

More than half of the audience members are women, according to Deissenberg, and she reckons it’s because they feel good about how women are portrayed in the show. “(The show) celebrates femininity at large, and the spiritual, emotional, and physical beauty of women,” she adds.

“Today’s new feminism, Deissenberg says, means women like her performers are allowed to “do what they want with their sexuality and are not dependent on men at all.”

If you’re looking for a show with strong, confident women owning their performance and being comfortable in their own skin, Crazy Horse is your show. Somehow, their confidence and comfort resonate even after as they take their bows and the credits roll on the LED screens.

Oh and just FYI, you’ll be left with an earworm of a song lingering in your head long after you leave the theatre.
