6. Learn more about Sir Stamford Raffles and Singapore’s history

Sir Stamford Raffles has been garnering much attention in the recent month since the Singapore Bicentennial Office made his statue “disappear”. However, other than long-forgotten lessons from our Social Studies classes in Primary school, how much do we really know about the man whom institutions and districts in our country is named after?

With the Singapore Bicentennial coming up, the Asian Civilisations Museum is holding an exhibition entitled “Raffles in Southeast Asia: Revisiting the Scholar and Statesman,” from 1 February to 28 April. Through some 240 artworks and cultural artifacts from our region’s past, the exhibition seeks to open up conversations about Raffles’ role in Singapore’s history, present a multi-angled picture of the man himself, as well as showcase the rich culture of Java and the Malay world. This exhibition is also curated in collaboration with the British Museum, so we anticipate some fascinating objects presented for the first time in Singapore, offering British perspectives on our nation’s history.
