8. Explore and discover more about the Peranakan community

Ever since the release of the hit drama Little Nonya in 2008, there has been a growing interest in the Peranakan community and their history. The Peranakan Museum gives you a chance to learn more about their rich history – the accurate and non-dramatised version!

Do visit the special exhibition Amek Gambar: Peranakans and Photography! Amek Gambar presents some of the rarest and earliest images of Peranakans, while outlining the emergence, adoption, and evolution of photography in Southeast Asia over a century and a half. The museum has added 27 photographs to the display that further explore themes of self and cultural identity, including a contemporary artwork by award-winning Singapore-based artist Sherman Ong.

The exhibition runs till 24 March 2019 at the Peranakan Museum. The Peranakan Museum closes on 1 April 2019 for redevelopment works, and will reopen in mid-2021.

For avid photographers, don’t miss out on a chance to win a DSLR camera and a Fujifilm instax SQUARE SQ20, as well as free entry to the exhibition! Click here for more information.
