Named after Chinese landowner Chew Joo Chiat, the neighbourhood of Joo Chiat used to be populated by a growing English educated middle class consisting of Peranakans and Eurasians. Now, the cultural enclave can be easily recognised by its unique row of shophouses seen along the main road.

Of late, the Koon Seng Shophouses have been granted conservation status by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Peranakan restaurants have bolstered efforts to preserve their culture. 9. Peranakan Boutique Tour @ Rumah Kim Choo 

For Nyonya rice dumplings and kuehs, head to Rumah Kim Choo, a Peranakan stalwart in Singapore’s diverse gourmet scene. Though this triangular snack may appear to be just ingredients housed in a glutinous rice shell, not many makers possessed the capability of encompassing the rich flavours authentic Peranakan cooking can produce. To pass on the valuable knowledge of what it means to be Peranakan, Rumah Kim Choo offers boutique tours spotlight the unique Nanyang heritage. The tour is approximately one-hour, inclduing a shoe beading demonstration and shared talks about the heritage of Singapore before ending off with a tasting session where guests get to sample Pernankan dumpling, otah and kuehs. Each session can host up to 30 people and costs $12.50 per person.
