Jonathan Roxmouth steals the show as Che

South African wunderkind Jonathan Roxmouth brings an insouciant lightness to the show as Che, a guerilla-clad revolutionary who scorns the upper class and the political aggrandisement taking place.

As a cynical commentator who’s world-weary but who can’t help but be involved, Che’s contempt towards the establishment is portrayed with conviction right from his very first number “Oh What A Circus”, where he sings bemusedly at the public mourning following the death of Eva Peron.

Throughout the show, Roxouth’s stage presence as Che was undeniably assertive and confident. Whether it was his tongue-in-cheek mimicry of the generals, politicians and aristocrats, or his waltzing with co-star Kingston in “Waltz for Eva and Che”, it seems almost impossible for Roxouth to put a foot or emotion wrong. It’s little wonder that he received possibly the loudest applause in the theatre when we caught the show on the opening gala night.
