Bakeries and cake shops have been on the rise like soufflés. We do a round-up on which is worth a visit
By Cheryl Chia
There have been so many cupcake stores, bakeries and cake stores popping up lately, we’ve been putting on so much weight from trying almost all of them.
These cakes and pastries are perfect for breakfast, mid-day munchies or even as gifts to others.
Here are a few stores we liked.
Artisan Boulangerie Co.
Also known colloquially as ABC, this bakery takes artisan to the next level with their slew of handmade breads, vienoisseries and pastries. Eran Mayer, the baker, who originates from France, tells us that his staff works in 24-hour shifts to ensure that the goods
are always fresh.
We loved the plain croissants and the rustic, fresh baguettes. If you’d like to have a good lemon or caramel tart, do pop in for a treat. Drawing upon the chef’s childhood in Israel, the bakery also sells challah – a type of Jewish bread.
Our favourite part of this bakery? You get to watch the croissants rise in the oven from the large glass window at their Killiney Road outlet. They recently opened two more outlets in Great World City and Metropolis, and another at Asia Square.
118 Killiney Road, #01-01, Singapore 239555. Tel: 6444 8130
Audacious Cakery
Tucked in the enclave of Everton Park is the newly-opened Audacious Cakery. Featuring delectable selections of both sweet and savoury, this quiet bakery emphasises on good ingredients.
Their cakes rotate occasionally, to keep things fresh.
We loved their take on the Black Forest cake which features mounds of dark chocolate and cream with alcohol-soaked cherries from Europe. Opened by Sharryl Ng and Kenneth Lai, the husband and wife duo also serve cupcakes in flavours such as green tea and sesame.
Blk 2, Everton Park, #01-61, Singapore 081002. Tel: 6223 3047
Lady M
New York-based cake store Lady M finally opened at Marina Square a few months ago. Known for their signature mille-crepe cake, the store in Singapore also features a green tea flavoured one.
Every single layer of the mille-crepe cake is filled with sweet cream, for an indulgent slice of heaven. They also have cakes such as a Gateau Aux Marrons, Checkerboard Cake and Strawberry Shortcake. They also sell whole cakes, with ample notice.
Their second outlet at One Fullerton will be open in November.
Marina Square Shopping Mall, #02-103, Singapore 039594. Tel: 6822 2095
Krispy Kreme
At one point or another Singaporeans have smuggled these treats from Krispy Kreme back from neighbouring Malaysia, or even Australia, in their luggage but inconvenience is no more with their first outlet in Tangs Orchard.
Try their signature glazed doughnuts or their other sweet, flavoured doughnuts for a sugar rush.

#1 Baker Street
From an online presence to a brick-and-mortar store, #1 Baker Street has a cult following for their cupcakes and artfully-designed custom cakes. Sheela, the owner of the store, does unique cupcakes such as Kaya Toast flavour, TequilaSheela and Banochocolate – banana and chocolate.
She specialises in customising both cakes and cupcakes, and has painstakingly delivered them as far as Milan and Paris.
