Carver & Co joins the plethora of good eats already present in the east of Singapore

Ever craved a huge turkey or roast of any kind during the middle of the year? Well, if you’re the kind of person who misses seasonal Christmas food when it isn’t Christmas, Carvers & Co is here to the rescue.

Having opened on the stretch of restaurants opposite 112 Katong on East Coast Road, its kitchen is helmed by Sarah Jane Lin, a former Pilates instructor turned chef who used to be a small stakeholder in One Man Coffee on Thomson Road.

Fresh out of that kitchen comes rich dishes such as whole roast turkeys, porchetta and steaks. Do ask for the daily roast specials as they change frequently.

Meat Galore

The meal gets off to a promising start with Paprika Candied Bacon Chips ($6), which is a crispy bak kwa-like treat. I also managed to try one of the brunch items.

Carvers & Co’s Truffle Egg-in-The-Hole Toast ($15) is a modern take on the Toad In The Hole dish from Britain and features a piece of toast with the middle cut out and filled with an egg infused with truffle oil and then covered with a slice of cheese. The little piece of bread from the middle comes as a quaint side with bacon jam on the top.

The daily roasts (market price) come in single, half or whole portions. When I was there I managed to try part of a hefty 10kg turkey. I felt that the turkey at Carvers & Co was slightly dry despite Sarah’s best effort but, thankfully, her porchetta fared much better.

The porchetta was crisp on the outside with a crackling rind, while the inside remained soft and fatty. The porchetta came with an apple chutney sauce and extra pork crackling. Yum!

The standard serving of roasts comes with two sides of mashed potato and candied carrots.

The desserts change regularly too, so it is important to look at the blackboard hanging in the store for your options on the day.
I was fortunate to get the Fruit Crumble ($9.90), which arrived fresh out of the oven. The crumble is more like a cobbler encased in a cocotte with bananas and blackberries. The vanilla ice cream on top of the warm crumble melted into the dessert, resulting in a comforting treat.

Also available are options such as the Dark Chocolate Tart ($12.90) with butternut crust and fresh cream, and two rotating cake flavours – it was red velvet and lemon meringue when I was there.
