Rise to the occasion, whether you’re a beginner or a pro
By Samantha Francis
You know that person who turns up at someone’s birthday gathering with a stunning, rose-piped cake that she’s baked all by herself?
I’m not her.
The magic of baking, aptly put into words.
While I’ve made a couple of feeble attempts at chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes, a hands-on baking session at Brettschneider’s Baking & Cooking School left me amazed at how much more I could do.
Under master baker Dean’s tutelage and watchful eye, I managed to bake my very own (and first) focaccia bread!
Whether you’re a beginner like me or a seasoned baker, these five baking schools are worth checking out.
1. Brettschneider’s Baking & Cooking School
Helmed by global baker Dean Brettschneider, who is also the co-owner and founder of the Baker & Cook artisan bakeries, Brettschneider’s Baking & Cooking School offers professionally taught, hands-on baking and cooking classes in a cosy home kitchen environment.
I had the fortune to try out his Italian Flatbreads & Pizza Making class and was floored by the intricacies of bread making. Proper kneading wasn’t about squishing the dough in random directions, instead, there was a simple method which he coined as ‘tap, pull, fold’, that allowed the wet dough to be nicely shaped for proofing.
Apart from bread making, students will also be spoilt for choice by a range of baking and cooking classes featuring pastries, cakes, tarts and local cuisine.
