Japanese-inspired bar Kyo launches its Izakaya hour with sliders, sushi and tartare

Who says that bar grub has to be overpriced cheap and greasy food?

New kid on the block Kyo makes quality bar food that is easy to eat and great for sharing with friends over cocktails or beer. The extensive 18-item menu specialises in quality bites with in-house specials.

Something for Everyone

Dirk Cornelis, Kyo’s general manager, says, “The menu is focused so that everyone can find their taste. It’s simple yet sophisticated. For example, the potato wedges are given a twist with nori-bonito flakes and sesame served with wasabi and sriracha mayo.”

“Another highlight is the Truffled Yuzu Tai Roll with the snapper (tai) on top and snow crab inside, served with an amazing truffled yuzu for dipping,” he adds.

We loved the refreshing Salmon and Tuna Tartare ($24) with avocado wasabi, toasted sesame seeds and wasabi sprouts. Paired with a side of fresh nacho chips, it is a refreshing palate teaser before the main deal.

The Shiso Chimichurri Beef ($32), a sushi roll with slices of Wagyu beef, daikon and avocado, is also a must-try. The tart and slightly spicy sauce complemented the tender and lightly-seared pieces of beef.

Superb Sliders

The sliders are also not to be missed. We tried the Kimchi BBQ Pork Belly ($16 for three). The savoury belly pork was coated in their own in-house barbecue sauce and topped with kimchi, shallots and cilantro in between their signature potato rolls.

They also have interesting-looking Prawn and Chilli Crab Squid Ink ($18 for three) sliders with chilli crab and lemon prawn patties with arugula, Japanese cucumbers and cilantro on a squid ink bun.

Crowd pleasers such as the Soy Marinated Salmon Roll ($18) filled with cream cheese, wasabi mayo, asparagus and tempura flakes and the Blistered Edamame ($12) with togarashu sea salt and lime soy sauce are also great treats.

Unique Cocktails and Sake

Their potent house cocktails range from $18 to $25 with unique concoctions such as the Malabar Gold ($20) – Absolut Vanilla, pineapple and lime juice, cardamom, ginger and rosewater.

They also have a collection of sakes from the famed Nakao Sake, Dassai Sake and Horaisen Sekiya Shuzo breweries and whiskies as well as Japanese beer on tap.
