#WeekenderTries: A First-Hand Look at the HIFU Experience

As we age, changes in skin firmness, facial contours and elasticity often happen so gradually that we barely notice them at first.

Rather than making an immediate or dramatic change to my appearance, I wanted to try something relatively gentle that did not involve a lengthy recovery period. So this time, I decided to experience High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for myself and find out what the much-talked-about lifting and tightening” treatment actually feels like.

What Exactly Is HIFU?

HIFU is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target different depths beneath the skin. In simple terms, the device concentrates ultrasound energy precisely at selected tissue layers, where the resulting thermal effect stimulates the skin’s natural repair processes and collagen production.

Unlike conventional surface treatments, HIFU is not simply intended to make the skin feel more hydrated or refreshed. Its main focus is on improving skin firmness and facial contours.

Of course, everyone’s skin type, age and skin condition are different, and the equipment and treatment settings used can also vary. Results, therefore, differ from person to person.

My HIFU Experience

When I arrived at Singapore’s Celebrity Aesthetics Clinic – The Clifford Clinic, the treatment did not begin immediately. The first step was an assessment and consultation. Dr. Law Zhi Wei looked at my facial contours, skin condition and the areas I wanted to improve, before explaining what the treatment would involve.

Once the treatment plan had been confirmed, my face was cleansed, and the HIFU treatment began.

I have to admit that I felt slightly nervous beforehand. Words such as “focused ultrasound” and “deep tissue” can sound a little intimidating when you have never experienced the treatment before.

Once the procedure started, the device was gradually moved across different areas of my face. I could feel intermittent warmth and mild prickling sensations. The sensation was more noticeable over certain sensitive areas or places where the bone was closer to the surface.

The feeling was not constant throughout the entire treatment. It varied depending on the area being treated and the depth of energy being delivered.

For me, one of the most reassuring aspects was being able to communicate with the practitioner throughout the procedure. If the sensation became too intense, I could let them know so that the treatment could be adjusted accordingly.

What I Looked Forward to Most: Seeing the Changes Afterwards

As soon as the treatment was completed, I looked in the mirror.

The most noticeable immediate difference was not a dramatic “I suddenly look like a different person” transformation. Instead, my face simply looked fresher overall, and my skin appeared somewhat firmer.

One characteristic of HIFU is that it is not designed solely around an immediate visual change. Collagen-related changes take time, so the appearance of the treated areas may continue to evolve gradually after the procedure.

This also means that HIFU is not a magical treatment that gives everyone a perfect facial contour immediately after one session. The degree of improvement and how long the results last can depend on many factors, including the individual, the device used, treatment parameters and the way the procedure is performed.

Does HIFU Hurt? My Experience

If pain is your main concern, I would describe it this way: you can definitely feel it, but for me, it was completely tolerable.

During the treatment, I experienced warmth, mild prickling and, at times, a sensation that felt a little like a brief electrical pulse. Certain areas were more noticeable than others, but overall, I found the treatment manageable.

Pain tolerance is very subjective, of course. If you are particularly sensitive to discomfort, it is worth discussing this before treatment so the practitioner understands your tolerance level.

Is Special Aftercare Needed?

Although HIFU is a non-invasive treatment, it is still a good idea to take care of your skin afterwards.

My main priorities after treatment were:
– Keeping my skin well moisturised and comfortable
– Applying sunscreen consistently
– Avoiding unnecessary irritation or overly aggressive skincare
– Following the aftercare advice provided by the clinic

My Overall HIFU Experience

The biggest takeaway from my HIFU experience was that it is not really about trying to “look younger overnight.” I see it more as a treatment aimed at managing skin firmness and facial contours over time.

If you are concerned about facial definition or loss of skin firmness, but would prefer an option that does not involve the recovery period associated with traditional surgery, HIFU may be one treatment worth learning more about.
