Is it Brad and Angelina? Or maybe it’s Christopher and Fann. Wrong!
It’s Kai Kai Panda and Jia Jia Panda, of course!
The pair of adorable pandas arrived in Singapore on September 2012, and both their birthdays fall in September. The male panda, Kai Kai, turns seven on 14th Sept, and Jia Jia turned six on the 3 of Sept!
On this happy occasion, Ms Claire Chiang, Wildlife Reserves Singapore Chairperson, said, “In the past two years Kai Kai and Jia Jia have brought much joy to visitors at River Safari and …. we hope to leverage their popularity to initiate education programmes to highlight the threats that pandas face and encourage individuals to take actions to ensure a brighter future for this iconic animal.”
Many More Happy Years Ahead
The young couple have a few more decades to go before they beat the world’s oldest panda ever – Ming Ming, age 34!
Pandas in captivity live about 10 years more than in the wild, and it’s no wonder! They get the best care and nurturing from any zoos around the world, lucky enough to get a pair from China – including our very own River Safari where Kai Kai and Jia Jia lives.
Singapore Celebrates with Kai Kai and Jai Jai
The birthday pandas celebrated with “cakes” specially designed by ITE College West students. And theirs is a big birthday bash called Panda Party which starts 6-14 September.
River Safari will have free guided tours at the Giant Panda Forest and interactive show & tell sessions, where visitors get the chance to touch a panda skull, replica of course. And the part I like the most: get a whiff of panda poop!
Children can enjoy panda arts and crafts, from face painting to clay modelling activities at River Safari as well.
As part of the festivities during the Panda Party week, visitors can bring home a free panda lantern with purchases at River Safari’s retail and F&B outlets. Look out for new panda-licious treats such as Panda Chocolate Mousse, too.
In addition, Safari launched a new behind-the-scenes tour called Panda Rise & Shine. Participants can assist keepers in preparing breakfast for Kai Kai and Jia Jia. This premium experience brings participants into the pandas’ dens, kitchen and bamboo storage room.
