The official trailer and images give us a closer look at the much-anticipated season 3

Last night, Netflix finally unveiled the long-awaited trailer for Stranger Things season 3, which will return to our streaming screens globally on 4 July 2019. The official poster and teaser video released earlier got us excited, but it gave us way more questions than answers. That’s not the case with this full official trailer – it’s filled with lots of hints about what’s to come for the hit science fiction-fantasy series.
School’s out and summer vacation is in at Hawkins, Indiana. After dealing with so much horrors and trauma in the first two seasons, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, Eleven and Max seem to be enjoying a normal summer, finally teens just being teens. From the pool to the mall to a carnival, it looks like a fun summer for the gang… right?
Not so fast; things are not always what they seem in Hawkins, as the trailer reminds us.
Look how big the kids have grown! That’s the first thing that popped into our heads when we were watching the trailer – the boys, especially Mike (Finn Wolfhard), look so much taller than we remember.
The next thing we thought was, FINALLY the whole gang is together. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is no longer hiding somewhere or off on a dangerous mission of her own, and she and Mike are going strong. Did you catch them holding hands in every shot of them for the first whole minute of the trailer? And of course, there was that kiss. Blink and you might miss it in the trailer, but the fleetingness is what makes us love it more. Netflix really knows how to play with our Mileven hearts.
But Mileven isn’t the only pair the trailer is getting us excited for in Stranger Things 3. Max (Sadie Sink), who just moved to Hawkins in season 2, is also firmly a part of the group now. In addition to dating Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max also seems to have become fast friends with Eleven. After feeling frustrated by the tensions between the two girls over a silly misunderstanding (which involves a boy, no less), we’re so relieved and delighted by this friendship!
Based on the trailer, Max and Eleven will be getting lots of screentime together, doing everything from getting ice-cream to hanging out at the mall to putting on a mini 80s fashion show. We’re here for this strong female friendship!
Max’s sexy but scary older brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) is also back in the third season. He has taken a summer job as a lifeguard at the Hawkins community pool, catching the eye of pretty much every woman there, including a fellow lifeguard named Heather (Francesca Reale). If you recall the season 3 title tease video released earlier, it revealed that the third episode will be called “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard.” Would the missing lifeguard be Heather?
But, wait! What’s going on with Joyce and Hopper? The trailer is hinting that our favourite adult duo might see a whole new kind of action coming their way – the romantic kind. Fans have definitely expressed their interest in seeing them get together, so we’ll see.
Meanwhile at Starcourt Mall, another duo we have grown to love is definitely hitting it off. Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) have an adorable moment showing off their secret handshake to Steve’s not-so-amused co-worker at Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Shop.
After opening with these happy moments of friendship and love, the trailer takes a darker turn. “We’re not kids anymore,” Mike says sternly in a voice-over, as we see Will (Noah Schnapp) look tearfully at his photos with his friends. Looks like Mike doesn’t just mean their more grown-up physique that we mentioned, but that the gang would drift apart and hang out less. In that case, bring on the waterworks, because that is going to be so tough to watch.
Still, we have faith in the strong bonds of the group to know that they will do anything for one another, especially when danger strikes. And danger will strike, the trailer reveals, in the form of a new monster more deadly than we have ever met in the Stranger Things world. No bonus points for guessing it emerged from the Upside Down. It’s a horrifying fleshy-looking thing with multiple sharp limbs and just as sharp teeth that puts the original Demogorgon from season 1 as well as the Mind Flayer from season 2 to shame.
Through brief flashes in a montage, we see lots of scary moments. They include Billy getting some sort of awful infection that’s spreading on his arm; poor Steve getting badly beaten up once again, this time even stabbed at by a super thick needle (yikes!!!); a huge electric explosion, probably at Hawkins Lab; and Eleven looking lost in the void. Suffice it to say, the summer of 1985 is not going to be a simple and normal one at Hawkins. We are going to need all our favourite comfort foods to get us through binge-watching Stranger Things 3.
