2. These studs from the Obihiro Banei horse race

On our second day in Hokkaido, we were treated to a particularly interesting type of horse racing — the Obihiro Banei horse race, where plodding workhorses must complete its round while pulling 500kg sledges. Compared to ordinary races, the Obihiro Banei horse race requires more than just the horse’s speed, but also its strength and stamina. Strategic pacing is essential. If the horses run at a galloping pace at the beginning, they’ll get completely exhausted by the time they reach the slopes. Admission is JPY 100 (about 1 SGD).

If you feel that Lady Luck is on your side, indulge in a bit of gambling by betting on your favourite horse via the various automatic betting machines.

Animal lovers can get up close and personal with the horses. Feeding is encouraged, so go on and sayang them while they nibble on the feed you bought for them!
