Your body wasn’t just designed to run on treadmills, which is why you should check out the Tulum Jungle Gym — a beach exercise arena filled with tree stumps, logs for barbells and rope climbs.

Made to ignite your inner caveman, the gym will help you reconnect with nature while working your body, mind and soul.

Located on the Tulum Beach in Tulum, Mexico and situated south of Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula, the gym is also fast becoming a popular destination for beach-goers.

At the beachside gym, there is no end to the exercises you can come up with — simply use your imagination.

Replace weights with coconuts to add another level of difficulty to your crunches or drag car tires on the beach. You can even try lifting rope nets filled with rocks.

Breathtaking views

Tired of facing stuffy walls at your usual gym? Tulum lets you run your toes through the sand while you work the barbells to the sound of waves of the sea hitting the shore.

The gym overlooks a powdery white sand beach, and the stunning views will inspire you as you train.

Be careful though: Wild iguanas do roam the beaches and the last thing you want is to anger any of them.

You don’t have to worry about people staring at your speedos — there isn’t a dress code at this gym. In fact, most of the visitors work out in swimsuits and board shorts, offering a good dose of eye-candy if the sea view is not reason enough to visit.

Fitness fun

If you don’t have a fitness regimen in mind, there’s always the option of enrolling in their gym’s classes, which are geared towards all fitness levels.

Led by fitness trainers Katie and Ali, the classes will leave you hot and sweaty, but not without a smile on your face. The classes are customised based on the attendees, and there are also private classes if you prefer a workout designed specially for you.

The gym is open every day of the week, from 8am to 1pm, with classes starting at 8.30am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

A day pass will set you back about USD$20 (about SGD$28) and a weekly pass is available at USD$80 (about SGD$112).

Getting there

The Tulum Jungle Gym sits along the Tulum Beach, which lies on the Boca Paila Road in Mexico. Tulum is about 90 minutes away by car from the Cancun Airport. Most flights to Cancun would require transiting in Europe or America.
