5. Val d’Orcia, Italy

Italy may be the land of branded labels but they have cultural and gastronomic destinations too. Scattered with villas, farmhouses and castles nestled deep in the heart of the countryside of Tuscany and it’s capital Florence, visit the heart of the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia which was the subject of many Renaissance paintings, especially by the painters of the Scuola Senese, The Siena School.

If time permits, coincide your visit with Il Palio, and make some time in Siena for the build-up and see the actual race. A centuries-old tradition, rival parts of the city race their horses bareback around the beautiful Campo.
