Fly and cruise

As hybrid tours are on the up-and-up, one option that has been around for many years has enjoyed a recent revival. Fly-cruise packages typically offer travellers flights and transport to and from a certain port of call, where they can stay for a few days before or after embarking on a sea voyage (also inclusive).

As cruises often traverse across cities and even countries, fly-cruises allow travellers to maximise their vacation time by hopping to multiple destinations. On some cruises, like Costa Cruises’ new Japan itineraries, passengers can “open their eyes every day to a whole new port”, said the senior marketing and PR manager of Costa Cruises Hong Kong, Eunice Lee.

She added, “Travellers can arrange with the agency to stay at a port of call pre- or post-cruise to explore that part of [the country]. The air fare, hotel packages and all your needs can be settled in one sitting.”

For Chan Brothers, fly-cruises have registered a 30 per cent year-on-year increase in demand, with the most popular regions being Europe, Alaska and Asia, said Chang. The advantage of booking a fly-cruise with a travel agency is the guarantee that “vital arrangements such as confirmed flights, cruise arrangements, pre- or post-cruise accommodation, land tours and transfers are in sync”, she elaborated.

The Chan Brothers Travel Worldwide Cruise Centre offers packages with more than 10 leading cruise lines, with vessels ranging from large ocean liners to intimate river cruise ships.

With such hybrid travel packages on the rise, exploring unknown lands seems much easier – no mountain is too high to climb and no road too long to self-drive.
