Commemorating its 80th anniversary, KLM Royal dutch airlines celebrates this milestone with a number of interesting events
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines commemorates 80 years of scheduled flights to Singapore. With this milestone, KLM has been celebrating with a number of interesting campaigns and events, including for the public.
“We are pleased to be marking this 80th anniversary with various special celebrations for our customers, without whom this milestone would not have been possible. On 3 May 1933, a KLM Fokker F-18 landed in Singapore, making KLM the first western airline to serve Singapore with a scheduled service,” says Mr Domingo De Cola, General Manager, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.
“Since then, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has been growing from strength to strength and we hope to continue soaring to greater heights with customers!” he says.
KLM Says Campaign
KLM kicked off the celebrations with the launch of the “KLM Says” campaign on Apr 1, where for 30 days, various challenges were posted daily on www.klmsays.com. Participants logged in using their Facebook or Twitter account to type in the answer to the challenge.
Prizes were given away daily and ten Grand Prize challengers were chosen every week to go into the main draw, to win two Economy class return tickets from Singapore to any KLM destination in the world.
Musical Performances
Last weekend, the Band of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines serenaded visitors to the Singapore Botanic Gardens on May 11, while music enthusiasts enjoyed a performance of the Band s at the School of The Arts (SOTA) Concert Hall on May 12.
This concert saw the band perform with the Singapore Winds Symphony orchestra. Famous Dutch composer Johan De Meij was the special guest.
“With this gesture of thanks to our customers who made this 80th anniversary possible, we hope to bring a bit of Dutch culture and share it with all Singaporeans,” says Mr De Cola.
Tulipmania
In a special collaboration between KLM and Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, 14 tonnes of tulips (about 48,000 bulbs) were shipped from The Netherlands to Singapore via KLM Cargo. These tulips, iconic symbols of The Netherlands, have been on display at the Tulipmania exhibit at the Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay.
To celebrate Mother’s Day, KLM had also imported 2,500 tulip stalks that were given out at Raffles Place as part of the KLM Loves Mum Campaign.
KLM in Singapore
Founded in 1919, KLM is the oldest international airline in the world. It began to write history in the Southeast Asian region in the early 1930s when it took the lead in the development of air services between Europe and the Far East.
Singapore’s strategic location allowed it to develop into a port of call and stopover for flights heading for the Dutch East Indies.
The Tulipmania exhibit is on until May 20. For more on KLM, visit www.klm.sg
