5. Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of Sugar Mills)

Once the industrial powerhouse of the nation, a total of three valleys make up this magnificent UNESCO site. Learn about the valley’s history through a ride on the Baldwin Locomotive steam train that takes you through the area and journey through the dark history of slave ownership at the Manaca Iznaga Estate (which has now been turned into a restaurant). Back in the day, about 30,000 slaves would have ploughed the lands, harvesting and processing sugarcane in the various mill houses and plantations that peppered the fields.
