If you’re looking for a city known for beauty, culture and good food, head to scenic southern Spain and get lost in the charms of Seville
I got lost. After peeping into countless homes with gorgeous courtyards, I still couldn’t locate the hammam [Turkish bath].
So, I asked for directions, expecting the guy to point me in the right direction. Instead, he walked me there!
Being the cynic, I was sure he was expecting a tip or to sell me something. But after a three-minute stroll, he located Aire De Seville (the hamman I was looking for), wished me a pleasant trip and went on his way.
I was moved. After all, how often do we take the time in busy Singapore to walk a complete stranger to where he or she wants to go? That pretty much sums up my experience in Seville.
Seville is surprisingly charming in every way. The architecture is spectacular, the place is rich in history, and the people, food and pace of life made me feel I could spend forever wandering around getting lost and I would be happy.
Here are the first two jaw-dropping sights not to be missed.
The Giralda
The cathedral of Seville, Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (Cathedral of St Mary of the See), stands in the centre of the old town and is said to be the largest Gothic building in the world. It is also the largest cathedral and the third-largest church in the world.
One of the most interesting features of the cathedral is the Giralda, which is a former minaret of a 12th Century mosque that has been converted into the bell tower of the cathedral. The tower has no stairs; instead there are 35 ramps that take you to the top where you are rewarded with a dazzling view.
The best way to admire the intricate stained glass windows and gargoyles is to book a hotel room overlooking the cathedral. The Alcazar of Seville
Imagine a palace built in the 1300s that’s still in use by the royal family today. The Alcazar of Seville or Reales Alcazares de Sevilla, will take your breath away.
The Alcazar of Seville is a combination of different architectural styles from Mudejar to Gothic and is a real masterpiece. You might even get a bit of a neck ache from looking up as the arches and ceilings are so intricately decorated and gorgeous!
Take your time and stroll through the picturesque gardens as well.
