4. Egypt: Khan Al-Khalili Bazaar

This labyrinthine souk — also known as the Khan — dates as far back as 1382, when it sat in the centre of Cairo’s principal zone of commercial and trade activity.

By the late-15th century, this district became a major hub for foreign trade, which then included slave and precious stone markets.

You won’t find any human ‘trade’ here today. Instead, the Khan is a mini-mall of semi-precious stones, toys, alabaster statuettes (an Egyptian specialty), spices and even ornate tents. It’s a treat to wander off into the narrow alleys here, lured by the scent of spices and shining trinkets at bargain prices.

Visitors can also look out for construction remains under the rule of Sultan al-Ghuri, Egypt’s last major Mamluk sultan. These include iron-grilled windows from the original merchants’ rooms and the two monumental gates, Bab al-Badistan and Bab al-Ghuri.

Don’t forget to put your bargaining skills to use. It has been recommended that shoppers should always ask for half the quoted price. The Khan is open from morning to sundown every day, but some stalls may close for break on Sunday.
