USA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

For those who’d like to see the bigger picture, this park in Fort Oglethorpe in Tennessee offers up a breathtaking view that also holds great significance to the country.

From the pinnacle of Lookout Mountain, you can gaze over the rolling hills to trace the movements of armies during two major battles of the Civil War: the Battle of Chickamauga and the Chattanooga Campaign in 1863.

The Battle of Chickamauga resulted in the second-highest loss in any battle in the Civil War, with the total casualty count at about 34,500. This was shortly followed by the Chattanooga Campaign, which eliminated the last significant Confederate control of Tennessee and resulted in Union victory.

In this 2,145ha area, Lookout Mountain is a must-visit for its historic treasures and sweeping view of the park. The scuffle on its slopes was nicknamed the “Battle Above the Clouds”, and you can spot artist James Walker’s massive painting of this struggle on display in the visitors’ centre.
