Our travel writer discovers a mix of tranquillity and adventure at Bintan Lagoon Resort

Do you know where, other than Taiwan, you can launch paper lanterns into the sky?
I was not expecting this treat just an hour away in Bintan, but there I was: Crouching in the dark beach and watching the crepe paper swell ever so slowly over a flickering flame.
When asked how long we would have to wait, the staff at Bintan Lagoon Resort simply said, “It takes time.” After what felt like a whole evening — but was probably only 10 minutes — we released our lanterns and watched them float into the night.
Indeed, compared to the rush of the city, time in the resort slows to a calm and peaceful crawl.
