Tower of Joy in “Game of Thrones”

Filmed at Zafra Castle in Guadalajara, Spain, the Tower of Joy was named by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Despite its happy title, this site has seen much blood and suffering in the series.

When Lord Eddard Stark and his companions approached the tower, they clashed with three members of the Kingsguard who were standing guard. After the resulting battle, Eddard entered the tower, only to find his sister, Lyanna Stark, dying inside. The finale of season six featured one of the most anticipated revelations: A flashback to Lyanna’s mysterious death in the Tower of Joy.

In real life, Zafra Castle is popularly known as “the fortress of Spain’s Siberia”—the area can plunge to freezing temperatures in winter—with its commanding tower rising above the rocks of Campillo de Dueñas.
