2. Chippendale, Sydney

Just as gentrification transformed its neighbour Surry Hills, Chippendale has emerged as a residential nucleus with a cool street vibe. The proverbial fairy godmother? The recently completed Central Park, a mixed-use urban renewal project that has brought in a wave of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Affectionately known as Chippo, this suburb is home to some of the finest unexpected finds in Sydney. Many locals herald Brickfield as the bakery with the best bread in town, and you may find yourself impressed by the four-storey collection of contemporary Chinese art at the White Rabbit, which also serves dumplings should you find yourself craving them.
