Think of Taiwan and many will launch into daydreams about Taipei’s buzzing night markets and colourful ever-changing city corners. But while the capital city is a familiar haunt for Singaporeans young and old, hipster habitats are blossoming in Taiwan’s smaller urban enclaves.

5. British Consulate at Takow, Kaohsiung

At ground level, the British Consulate at Takow seems like any other heritage museum. However, the building by the gates, where you can find a brief history of the British Consulate in 1864 Taiwan, isn’t the star attraction.

Instead, strap your boots and climb the steep stairs winding up the hill that looms in the back. Once you reach the top, you’ll have no time to catch your breath because it will be promptly taken away by the view.

This is the peak of Shaochuantou, where the actual British Consulate building is. The vantage point overlooks Xiziwan Bay and the Port of Kaohsiung. Grab a cuppa and chill at the cafe while gazing out into the beautiful bay, or simply prop up on the ledge and watch the boats and ships drift about the port. Entrance into the grounds costs 99 yuan per adult.

British Consulate at Takow, No 20, Lianhai Road, Gushan District, Kaohsiung City, 804 Taiwan.
