Think of Taiwan and many will launch into daydreams about Taipei’s buzzing night markets and colourful ever-changing city corners. But while the capital city is a familiar haunt for Singaporeans young and old, hipster habitats are blossoming in Taiwan’s smaller urban enclaves.

2. Dadong Night Market, Tainan

What’s a trip to Taiwan without traipsing through a night market or two? Thronging with a youthful local crowd of foodies and seasoned carnival gamers, Dadong Night Market is a must-visit when you’re in Tainan.

Right at the main entrance of the market beside the motorcycle parking lot is the first stall you should attack. This humble booth sells only one product: Deep-fried sweet potato balls. The crisp yet chewy treat comes at 100 yuan (about $5) per bag, and by the middle of the night, locals are milling to this stall in droves. If you don’t see a queue, seize the opportunity before the crowd starts to swell.

Other must-tries at Dadong Night Market include deep-fried ribs, giant slices of grilled squid, hashbrown-stuffed omelette with toppings and, as you’ll be duly prompted by its pungent smell, smelly tofu.

Dadong Night Market, No 276, Section 1, Linsen Road, East District, Tainan City, 701 Taiwan.
