2. Pulau Aur, Malaysia

Here’s an unexpected reason to head across the border to Johor, Malaysia. Another tiny pristine island, Pulau Aur off Mersing Jetty in Johor has no roads, few shops and a traditional village still thriving, keeping its beauty in simplicity.

The island, which is part of the Johor Marine Park, is loved by marine life enthusiasts. Unique species often sighted on snorkels and dives here include manta rays, barracudas, angelfish and bumphead parrotfish.

Getting here is surprisingly simple from Singapore: You may take a coach from Golden Mile Complex to Mersing Jetty in Johor, where ferries depart to Pulau Aur in the morning.

Do note that the island’s weather is affected by the northeast monsoon November to March, and the southwest monsoon from May to September.
