With a trove of deep-rooted traditions and celebrated cultures, Yangon - formerly known as Rangoon - is best felt without the usual humdrum sightseeing tours.

5. A foodie adventure

While it borrows elements from its neighbours India, Thailand and China, Myanmar’s cuisine is easily recognisable with its unique flavours. Food stalls are aplenty in downtown Yangon, and it’s hard to go wrong with any dish, especially when everything is served piping hot and fresh.

Occasionally you’ll find tables and chairs adjacent to the food stalls where you can sit and join the hearty local chatter over a cup of Burmese milk tea. This pick-me-up drink is usually paired with roti (Indian flatbread) or freshly made dough sticks.

You can also embark on a Street Snack Tour where you will be taken into the street markets through the eyes of a local, English-speaking guide and taste up to 10 different snacks while walking around.

Maha Bandula Park St, Yangon, Myanmar (starting point).
