Unbeknownst to many, Singapore is not just cutting-edge when it comes to technology. We are also one of the best when it comes to furniture design. Here’s proof
Singapore Lah! The Design Showcase was a collective show of seven award-winning design practices, showing on world premiere 60 unpublished lighting and furniture – ranging from seating to tableware, from rocking and innovative stools or containers to bookshelves, from technology to pet furniture and toys.
For the first time, the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), supported by Design Singapore Council and by International Enterprise Singapore presented a collective of the island’s young award-winning designers and their stellar collections to the international audience at the Milano Furniture Fair 2013.
Seven design studios were selected by the official body of the design industry in Singapore to represent Singapore with their new collections on world premiere.
Here are just some of the highlights.
Logg Cabinet
Available in oak and teak with powder-coated steel legs, it is inspired by log cabins in the mountains. There are hidden handles at the bottom of each of the four drawers. From Jarrod Lim Design.
SuperKross Bookcase
This book case looks like a folded ladder or two bookcases fused into one. It comes in black, white or natural wood. From Kelvin Teo and Kapsule Collection.
Tang’s Chair
Inspired by oriental furniture, it reflects the simplicity of its material properties. Available in various colours. From Acid Studio.
Lullaby
This unusual chair rocks gently from side to side, or forward and backward, depending on how you choose to sit on it. With an interesting look, it is made out of rattan and stainless steel. From Studiorigins.
Rok Paperweight
Rok takes the connotations of the weight and heft of the industrial and raw nature of concrete and turns it on its head in the form of an ornamental paperweight. From Desinere.
Tree Ring Birdhouse
This unique teak wood birdhouse with several rings makes an intriguing decoration, and functions as a shelter for small birds. From Jarrod Lim Design.
Wing Chair
The Wing Chair uses simple sheet metal bending techniques to create a modern “home industrial” look. The internal compartment serves a space-saving function and suits various lifestyle habits of users. From NextOfKin Creatives.
