A mouth-watering dish on the front cover of your favourite gourmet magazine is never captured by fluke.

While an expertly-plated dish wins half the battle, the magic to luscious food photography lies in the ability to convey an appropriate mood or emotion.

From the type of equipment to the styling, a photographer’s ability to pay attention to details distinguishes Insta-worthy photos from those forever relegated to your camera’s archives.

To help budding food photographers achieve this, Nugene Chiang of Canon Imaging Academy tells us that it is crucial to take time to plan one's shot before snapping away.

5. Take note of the lighting

The best photos of food, or any subject for that matter, are ones that are well lighted. No matter how delectable a dish appears, an under-lit or over-lit shot can be infinitely distracting.

Play around with both natural and artificial light, and at different intensities. The use of Canon macro ring lite, for instance, can help provide photographers with fully automatic flash metering to deliver accurate and consistent exposures. While natural soft light is able to capture even the finest details, great depth and dimension can emerge when artificial light is wielded with finesse, along with the use of shadows and highlights.

Pro Tip: remember that using direct flash is not recommended for food photography as the lighting produced can be too harsh and throw off the natural balance of colours.
