To many, the Met Gala is the American East Coast's highlight of the year.

This intensely coveted event - held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York - is a heavily star-studded affair where high-profile celebrities turn out in full fashionable force on the steps of the Met Museum.

The gala celebrates the opening of the Met Costume Institute's annual blockbuster fashion exhibition. This year's pays tribute to Rei Kawakubo, the founder of revolutionary label Comme des Garçons - known for challenging the concepts of beauty, identity and genre.

So, naturally, everyone turned to the experimental side of fashion as they graced the steps of the Met.
