After flying 22 hours without in-flight entertainment, I heaved a big sigh of relief. I've finally arrived at the Big Apple, New York City, safe and sound.

However, the next hour and a half was spent finding my way around in old-school fashion - think physical maps and asking for directions. Looking back, I spotted some fatal errors that could have saved me time to explore the city instead.

Here are five things I've learned to prepare before landing in US for a trouble-free trip.

4. Don’t be that person that holds the clearance lines

The security checks through US airports are known to be really detailed and precise. Be considerate, and don’t be that person that holds up the security clearance lines. Place all your toiletries in a resealable bag, bring out your laptop, portable battery pack, take off your shoes and stand in the line with your luggage unzipped, face up.

Before crossing the body-scanning machine, it’s advisable to remove all jewellery as well. Certain foods and items are prohibited as well, so don’t try bringing it in unless you want to risk it being checked piece by piece, or worse, being confiscated.
