19. Pulau Ubin

Travel back in time to the 1960s when Singapore used to be nothing but a kampung (Malay for village). Shaped like a boomerang, this offshore island just off the north-eastern corner of Singapore used to be a thriving settlement that engaged in heavy granite mining. Despite Singapore’s inevitable modernisation, Ubin has kept its rustic beauty and simplicity of a bygone era. Trekking through the trails on the island, not only do you get to witness its rich ecosystem, you can interact with the locals there who have limited access to the current and efficient public utilities available on mainland Singapore. Don’t forget to stop by the quarry for the mesmerising granite hills and the precious, well-preserved Chek Jawa Wetlands for a complete trip.
