Hair loss is a touchy subject among men but there are ways to stem the loss before it is too late. We speak with an expert

Scientifically termed androgenetic alopecia, the problem of hair loss can be found in men of all ages starting from the age of 20.
About 50 per cent of men suffer from hair loss when they reach the age of 50 and above. Dr Adolf E Klenk invented the Alpecin shampoo based on his research and development of the world’s first baldness calculator that predicts the age that men will start to bald.
What Causes Hair Loss
Contrary to the popular belief that hair loss is linked to the lack of virility, male pattern hair loss is actually caused by too much testosterone.
Dr Klenk, who is with the Dr Kurt Wolff Company as the head of Research & Development, explains, “It depends on individuals’ genetic composition. For example a young man aged 18 to 20 might experience a huge shift of hereditary hair loss.”
He also found the prevention for it – caffeine.
Debunking the Myths
“We selected caffeine because we know that caffeine is a very small molecule that can penetrate very easily. It has previously been used in some types of cosmetics as a promising substance, for example to reduce cellulite,” says Dr Klenk.
“Caffeine can prevent hair loss because it is a very potent energy enhancer and can trigger biological active components which can control the growth period of the hair root,” he says of his discovery.
He also tells us that the belief that certain foods can cause hair loss is false.
“In general, there is no specific food that causes hair loss, but we talk about moderation in everything. If you are on a strong reduction diet like a vegan diet, lack of energy within the body and hair loss will occur,” he says.
“It is wise to have a well-balanced diet. Vegan diets don’t usually have a good balance of nutrients. For example, some diets have a lack of zinc and vitamin B which is largely found in meats,” he advises.
Alpecin shampoo is a caffeine-based shampoo meant to help prevent hair-loss. Those with a history of baldness in the family can start using it as soon as they hit puberty, for the full effect. Alpecin shampoo is available in stores.
