Now, you can easily access and explore these secluded havens through tours with different interest and research groups. If you’re longing for a quick escape from the bustle of city life, you can spend your weekend discovering Singapore’s smaller sanctuaries.

Chek Jawa: Hermit crabs & a Tudor cottage
On the eastern border of Pulau Ubin, the Chek Jawa Wetlands are home to diverse ecosystems that include mangrove swamps, sandbars, seagrass lagoons, a rocky shore and a forest. If you’re lucky, you might spot curious creatures like crabs, starfish and even wild boar.
For the best view, follow the boardwalk along the coastline that will lead you to a 20m-high viewing tower where you can take in a panoramic view of Chek Jawa.
The area also has a treat for those with an interest in architecture or heritage. House No. 1 is an intriguing Tudor-style cottage, which features a fireplace that still works. It now functions as a visitor centre.
You can enjoy guided walks down Chek Jawa’s boardwalk with groups such as Naked Hermit Crabs and Ulu Singapore. To visit the intertidal flats at low tide — when most of the marine life can be spotted — book a tour ($60 per pax) with NParks. Register early to avoid disappointment.
