Frank Miller’s popular modern film noir action-thriller is back and badder, in 3D
When the first Sin City film was released in 2005, fans of the graphic novel fell instantly in love with co-directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s screen adaptation.
Now the striking cinematic aesthetics are back in a bigger, more daring, and equally-haunting sequel with stunning new additions to the cast.
More than Just Another Saturday Night
Some of the stories in A Dame to Kill for are prequels to the narratives from the first film. One of which is the fan favourite from the comics, “Just Another Saturday Night”.
With the desperate chasing vengeance and the vigilantes chasing murderers, paths cross in Sin City’s famous Kadie’s Club Pecos. The film tells the backstory of Josh Brolin’s character, Dwight, and his infatuation with Ava (portrayed by Eva Green of 300: Rise of an Empire).
Joseph Gordon-Levitt also stars as Johnny in one of the new stories, “A Long, Bad Night”. The young and arrogant gambler looks to take down his enemy in a wager of life and death. Expect things to not always turn out as expected.
Gaga, Gordon-Levitt & Gang
A Dame to Kill For boasts incredible additions to the already impressive cast. Joining the Sin City gang is the likes of Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3), Lady Gaga and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises).
Co-director Robert Rodriguez (who first gained famed from his Desperado series of films) is known for casting well-known actors in roles that are different from their usual personas. Perhaps we could look forward to seeing our fan favourites and film veterans cast in a different light.
Fans of the first film can be excited by the return of Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba as Hartigan and Nancy. Marv and his high forehead also return, once again portrayed by Mickey Rourke.
Cult Classic Graphic Novel in 3D
Rodriguez believes that Sin City, because of the quality of the original graphic novel by Frank Miller, could perhaps be the perfect movie to watch in 3D. The trademark black and white aesthetic on top of the film’s overall dark and haunting themes would complement the 3D experience.
“With the 3D, you feel like you are inside a graphic novel,” said the director.
For both long-time Sin City fans as well as modern film noir lovers, Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill for is nothing short of a must-see. Prepare for more sexy scenes and blood against black and white.
