In a post-apocalyptic world, the rich reside in the space station Elysium and the rest on a ruined planet

It is the year 2154, and only two classes of people exist: the very wealthy and the rest of the world.

The very wealthy live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium and the rest live on an overpopulated, ruined planet.

The people of Earth are desperate to escape crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land.

Unlikely Saviour

The only person with the chance to tip the scales is Max (played by Matt Damon), an ordinary person who is in desperate need to get to Elysium.

He reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (veteran actress Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces.

If he succeeds, he will save not only his own life, but the rest of the people on Earth as well.

Sci-Fi Meets Real Life

Director Neill Blomkamp of District 9 fame returns to the realm of science fiction, drawing two distinct and separate worlds.

“The idea of taking up stone, and mortar, and concrete, and swimming pools – and everything you’d need to build these mansions in a space station – is satire,” says Blomkamp.

“In that way, Elysium is the reverse of an alien invasion story – it’s still about human beings trying to protect a way of life, but instead of fighting for Earth, they do it by going into space,” he says.

Action and Politics

Producer Simon Kinberg says that the non-stop action of Elysium and the political subtext of the film mesh well together.
Blomkamp agrees, and says, “I want to blow things up as much as I want to make films that are about serious topics.”

He adds, “I’m more of a visual artist than anything else. I’m interested in politics, so once I’ve set up the world and start getting into character and story, the political ideas that intrigue me work their way in there…”
