When two undercover agents get “burnt”, they use the tricks of the trade to get back on track
Two undercover operatives from competing bureaus are forced on the run together after being disavowed by the people they work for.
The catch? Neither of them knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.
Hiding in Plain Sight
For the past year, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Bobby Trench (portrayed by the acclaimed Denzel Washington) and US naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (played by Mark Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip.
Both distrust each other as much as the criminals they’ve been assigned to take down.
When an attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel goes wrong, they both suddenly find themselves “burnt” by their superiors. To make matters worse, everyone seems to either want them dead or in jail, and the only person they can count on is each other.
Unfortunately for their pursuers, they’ve picked up a few tricks along the way.
A Very Different Partnership
Producer Marc Platt discusses his interest in the source material.
“I always love stories where there are two characters that are seemingly very different, and the journey of the story is the way in which those two characters find their way to each other,” says Platt.
“Here were two guys who don’t want to be in the same general vicinity of each other, but who are forced to work together and learn something about each other and themselves in the process,” he says.
A Unique & Fun Role
After portraying a series of intense characters in recent years, for which he had become famous for, Denzel was searching for some humour in his next role.
“When I read this script, it really made me laugh,” he says.
“Bobby does whatever is necessary to get the job done. I think he is an honest cop but he doesn’t live by the honour codes,” he adds.
A Great Partnership
Mark Wahlberg, recently seen as a muscle-bound doofus in Pain & Gain, was equally excited to be working with Washington.
“We have great chemistry. People will be surprised to see how playful Denzel can be,” he says.
Platt summarises the premise of the film, saying that 2 Guns is about “the nature of male friendship and the notion of two guys doing the job they believe in”.
This description doesn’t quite do the passion and action justice.
