What’s the concept for your new album, “The Edge of Paradise”?

It is very varied – it goes from jazz to slow rock to even one track with just me and a Steinway. It’s hard to describe because it’s very hybrid. This local arranger I worked with – his name is Bang Wenfu – everything he does is very hybrid, because of his hybrid [musical] background.

But what I can say is that it’s quite purist – whenever we do a particular style, we try to be very true to it. Because of our penchant for drama, everything is quite dramatic as well. The music tells a story.

Does that mean your concert will be very dramatic too?

It always will be! One of the things I do differently is that [unlike] most Chinese pop concerts where it’s default to use dancers, that’s something I don’t believe in.

So what do you do when you don’t have dancers? I think you have to be absolutely invested in your performance, and I think I’m very invested. It’s definitely going to be dramatic, even if it’s a slow song.

How has your style changed from what you’ve done before?

These days, even though I’m with a label now, I think my spirit is a lot more independent. When you don’t have to fight as hard, actually you don’t rebel as much. Life is like that, right?

Now everything is a lot more natural and moderated [for me], and not [extreme] just because I want to do something differently.
