7. Books classified by emotional impact (Tel Aviv, Israel)

This open-air Garden Library amazes us on so many levels. Located in Lewinsky Park, Tel Aviv, it was founded in 2009 to provide free books to the migrant workers, asylum seekers and refugees of the neighbourhood. As more people started to gather there, the space grew into a community centre where lots of events are organised to bring foreigners and local residents together.

Also unique is the library’s system of classifying books based on readers’ emotional responses! After reading a book, the reader is asked to describe the book by the emotion it elicited from them, choosing from the colour-coded categories given on the book’s inside cover: amusing, boring, bizarre, depressing, exciting, inspiring, or sentimental. The book is then re-shelved according to the emotion the last reader experienced, creating a mini conversation between readers who are likely to be strangers. So if you’re feeling up for something totally bizarre, you know what colour to look out for!
