Relatable imperfection
Despite her success after her break-up, Bridget still maintains that relatable awkwardness that has made her so appealing.
“The way that Bridget manages to persevere — despite circumstances that might bring her down — inspires people,” said Zellweger. “She’s suffering the same things we all do and, especially in her private moments, you’re able to connect to her.”
The actress, who perfectly embodies the loveable blonde, also revealed that part of the reason why she loves playing Jones is because she’s “perfectly imperfect, and that’s what people relate to in her”.
No other part is more fitting for Zellweger to make her comeback with after disappearing from the public eye for a period, even if it meant she had to “gain a little weight” for the role.
“Clumsiness comes naturally to me for some reason,” she said with a laugh. “The intentional clumsiness that is scripted is a lot of fun to play.”
Even fellow actor Firth, who appeared all suited up, suave and spy-like in action-comedy film Kingsman: The Secret Service, couldn’t resist the call of the series that branded him a Hollywood heartthrob in 2001 – although he experienced initial doubt.
“It only started to pull me when I saw the script going in the right direction,” recalled the actor, whose character, the uptight Darcy, is Jones’ incumbent lover throughout the series.
