2. Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games
Play takes centre stage this September at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) as it unveils its major exhibition, Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games. Opening on 5 September 2025 to celebrate Singapore’s 60th anniversary, the exhibition brings together more than 150 remarkable works to explore how classic and modern games have shaped the region’s cultural heartbeat for thousands of years. Each piece demonstrates how play fosters intellect, social bonds, and creativity, from chess and mahjong to contemporary creations.
Let’s Play! is the ACM’s first “playable” showcase, inviting guests to engage across five themed sections actively. Visitors can test their skills with interactive displays, enjoy outdoor installations, and discover newly commissioned works by cutting-edge designers and artists. Among the highlights, Climbs & Slides, created by Forest & Whale, transforms the familiar Snakes and Ladders board into a three-dimensional experience, encouraging reflection on life’s ups and downs. Outside, the oversized Checkmates! chess installation designed by Vendy Methodos and Osheen Siva sets contemporary reimaginings of traditional chess pieces on a dramatic seven-metre-wide board beside the Singapore River—celebrating the fusion of strategy and art.
The exhibition is further enriched with collaborations from schools, local game organisations, and community partners, alongside curator-led tours, creative workshops, and talks. Audiences are invited to experience play in both historical and contemporary contexts, seeing first-hand how Asia’s cultural legacy continues to inspire connection, creativity, and innovation today.
Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games runs from 5 September 2025 to 7 June 2026 at ACM. Admission charges apply.
Asian Civilisations Museum is located at 1 Empress Pl, Singapore 179555.
