Outside of predominantly Muslim countries such as Indonesia and the Arabic states, Singapore is one of the best places for a Muslim to live.

Islam is one of the largest religions in the world but in some areas, the population of believers is often one of the smaller minority groups. Living in such areas can be a challenge because access to Muslim-friendly goods and services can be limited. Muslims follow a strict set of rules that govern their daily lives. From praying five times a day to only consuming food approved by religious authorities, there are many considerations in the practice of the Islamic faith.

About 15 percent of Singaporean residents identify as believers of Islam, and this has allowed for the island nation to be more Muslim-friendly. If you are a Muslim who has just moved to Singapore, here are four things that you should know about your new home country.

2. Food Options are Abundant

Finding food that is halal or lawful is easy to do in Singapore. In hawker centres or complexes for cooked food, you can find stalls that specifically cater to the Muslims populations of the community. Some of these stalls may even be run by Muslims themselves. These places usually offer popular street foods at pocket-friendly prices. If you’re not sure what to try, you might opt to buy from the busiest stalls as these are likely the most popular eateries.

If you would like to eat at a restaurant, you can consult halal makan (food) directories or use the Muslim Pro app to find a halal-certified eatery. Even popular international franchises of cafes and fast food restaurants often secure halal certifications so they can serve the diverse needs of the Singaporean community. As a Muslim, you can dine out with the assurance of not committing haram (forbidden acts).
