3. Bukit Batok Nature Park

There’s no doubt about it, Bukit Batok Nature Park is a beautiful place. The jogging trails and footpaths are rarely crowded, and the serene place makes for a calming backdrop for a refreshing run. Underneath the tranquil facade though, is a history that’s quite morbid — the unfortunate even of two deaths within a span of 15 years; both of which still remain unsolved till this day.

In 1985, an 18-year-old junior college student left her house for a jog, but never returned. Her body was found in the undergrowth along a quiet stretch of the jogging route off Old Holland Road, hands tied with her own bra. The case was never solved, despite it having sparked off the biggest manhunts in Singapore then.

Fifteen years later, in 2000, another rape and murder took place in the park. An oil company executive due to be married was attacked and brutally raped while she was in the middle of her morning jog. Her cries were apparently heard by a passer-by, who called the police, but it was too late. She was found naked with blood over her mouth and nose, with her clothes discarded just next to her. She died a week later due to the severe injuries, and again, the culprit was never caught.
