Despite our well-acclaimed (sometimes rigid) education system and world-renowned Changi Airport, Singapore may not necessarily excel when it comes to producing quality brands that perform on the world stage. However, with National Day just around the corner, we did some probing and found some local household names that have gone on to do bigger things beyond this island-state. These brands have muscled their way through the bigger players within their industry to build a name for themselves and simultaneously put Singapore on the world map.

6. Old Chang Kee

Formerly known as Rex Curry Puff back in 1956 when it operated out from a small coffee shop stall near the then Rex Cinema along Mackenzie Road, it has already drawn seamless crowds for the piping hot pastry snack. Housed in a crisp golden shell, the simple ingredients of sliced egg, potato and chicken doused in an aromatic mix of curry and other spices won the hearts of many. With the vision of executive chairman Han Keen Juan, the Old Chang Kee production facility saw continuous upgrades in order to ensure consistency in the quality of the food produced. With the help of Mr William Lim, a graduate from an Australian university, they brought the range of signature snack product overseas to Perth in 2011. This came after Old Chang Kee has made a name of itself in neighbouring countries, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines. Just two months ago, in its European debut, the snack chain has launched it first outlet in Covent Garden, London in the United Kingdom (UK). Now, the bulk of Singaporeans who study in the UK will find it much easier to have a taste of home, except, it does come at a price when each puff comes up to about $5.40 or (£3) when one curry puff costs only $1.50.
