Burrito joint Muchachos opens its doors on Keong Saik Road

You’d be hard pressed to find good and easy-to-eat burrito joints in Singapore but they are getting ever easier to find.
The latest burrito joint to join the fray is Muchachos on Keong Saik Road. Started by Jonathan Yang and Elson Lee, the casual dining place has seen a non-stop flow of customers since they opened earlier in the month.
Bountiful Burritos
The burrito, as we know it, was actually created in San Francisco and not in Mexico. The burritos at Muchachos come in two sizes: the 12-inch Silver Bullet ($12) and the Burritino, a ten-inch burrito for the “womenfolk or nansy-pansies” ($9).
There is an array of fillings to choose from such as carnitas (pork), pescados (fried fish), carne asada (seared beef), pollo ascado (grilled chicken) and the barbacoa (oven-braised lamb).
Choice of Carbs
You can select your choice of carbohydrates from rice, refried beans or black beans. There is also an assortment of salsas and sauces to choose from.
Personally, I could easily finish the 12-inch Silver Bullet but Elson says that he even has trouble finishing the Burritino due to the heavy starch content. My dining companions also struggled with it.
Tasty Tortillas
The tortilla is first steamed before being stuffed full of your favourite fillings. This keeps the tortilla soft to the last bite.
I loved the carne asada [seared beef] with the salsa de pina [pineapple salsa] with guacamole and sour cream and, of course, the rice and beans. However, I did feel the rice was a little bit lacking in flavour for my taste.
They also have Chicharrons ($6) as a side dish. Not exactly Mexican, but who cares when it is so good? The crunchy, deep-fried pieces of pork rind with sweet chilli sauce are deceptively light; you almost forget you are eating pure fat.
